Ethelâs Plea
After an already busy day, Heather returned to Donut Delights to help it close down for the night. The motion of cleaning the counters helped her to think, and she enjoyed seeing the smiles on her employeesâ faces when she let them eat the few remaining donuts of the day.
âJust donât touch the donuts in the box by my purse,â said Heather. âI need to bring some of the Candy Corn Donuts home to my babysitters. If I know Eva and Leila, theyâll have finished all the pre-party prep with Lilly before I get home without my asking them to. And then Iâll need something to thank them with.â
Digby made a dramatic sigh as a joke that they were the donuts he really wanted. Then, he joined Janae and Luz cleaning up while Nina walked up to Heather.
âHave you had any luck with the case?â
âWeâve spoken to a few people, but we havenât had a big break yet,â Heather replied.
âI know Nick is worried about Mr. Rankle,â said Nina. âAnd even if Mr. Rankle does scare me, I care about him because Nick does.â
âI know the feeling,â said Heather. âSome days I think of him like an enemy and others like a neighbor.â
âI hope he didnât do it.â
âWhoever did it, weâll find them,â Heather assured her. âAnd I want to thank you for your help so far.â
âYou mean the movie ticket stubs?â asked Nina.
âThatâs right. Of course, I believed you when you said that you were with Nick at the time of the murder. But having the movie stubs gives us some physical evidence for this alibi as well,â said Heather. âAnd Nick has the same motive that Mr. Rankle would have for committing the murder.â
âDo you think one of the victimâs friends could have done it?â asked Nina. âThey were part of the egg throwing together. Maybe they fought about it after they were caught.â
âItâs possible,â said Heather. âThey told us they were together at the time of the murder at the twenty-four-hour dining hall. Weâll have to see if we can find some other witnesses to verify it.â
âUnless they got a ticket,â Nina teased.
âWe also spoke to the girlfriend,â said Heather. âShe claims to have left the party and gone to her room when her witch costume had liquid spilled on it. She helped narrow down the time of death because she told us Greg was still alive at ten thirty. But thereâs another suspect that Amy and I will talk to tomorrow.â
âSomeone is trying to get in,â Janae reported as a woman approached the shop door.
âI should have turned off the front lights earlier,â said Heather. âTell her weâre closed, but she can have some of the extra donuts from closing free of charge.â
âYouâre trying to give my donuts away?â Digby accused playfully.
Heather laughed. However, when she heard a commotion at the door, she sent her attention that way. It seemed the woman did not take the offer of donuts and was forcing her way inside. But as she came into view better, Heather could see that she knew the woman.
